Va Piano Cabernet Sauvignon 05:

Velvety, seamless Walla Walla Cab. The black cherry jumps from the glass, melding with cassis and background notes of barrel spice and creamy espresso. Rich and round, the 2005 Va Piano Cab can be opened and enjoyed now, but has the balance to age for at least 5 years. An Avalon Big Reds Club selection for January 08.

Extremely limited

From the winery: The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is a 15-barrel lot blend of Va Piano Estate Vineyard, Seven Hills Vineyard and Pepper Bridge Vineyard. Each year my Va Piano Estate vines show more maturity, depth, and structure, which allows the VP fruit to really show through the wine. Seven Hills fruit showcases more of the elegant side of this wine showing black cherry on the nose and soft round tannins through out the pallet. The Va Piano fruit has more earthiness, dark fruits & cassis. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful balanced wine with wonderful structure and depth. Drink from 2008 through 2015.

Tasting notes 2004

So limited it's only available as part of the Avalon NW Nig Reds Wine Club's February 2007 shipment.

Paul Gregutt of the Seattle Times had this to say about the wine and the winery: "Justin Wylie was nurturing a new vineyard, planted in 2000, at his Va Piano winery adjacent to Pepper Bridge. He lost his whole crop in 2004, but calls it a "blessing in disguise" as the vines had a full year to rest. Wylie had already contracted for other grapes as insurance and put them to good use. His 2004 Va Piano Cabernet Sauvignon from Lewis and Cold Creek vineyard fruit, is a fresh, clean wine with sappy berry flavors accented with toasted coconut and mocha."

Winemaker's Tasting notes:

Our 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful blend of Cold Creek Vineyard and Lewis Vineyard. Located 38 miles east of Yakima, Cold Creek Vineyard was planted in 1973 and one of the oldest vineyards in Washington State. The silty loam soil profile, higher than normal temperatures and very deep root system provide the ideal environment to grow rich and concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Lewis Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon block was planted in 2000 in a sandy loam soil on the Rattle Snake Ridge, located north of Prosser. The typical tonnage harvested from this block will range from 1.25 to 2.00 tons the acre, providing very concentrated small berries packed with black cherry flavors.

Aromas of mineral, graphite and plum are present in the nose. This wine showcases a full-bodied texture with soft velvety tannins that linger forever. TASTING NOTES 2003 VINTAGE

The Va Piano Cabernet Sauvignon 03 is full bodied and dense, with an exceptional mouth feel balanced by a lower than usual for the vintage alcohol level and polished tannin structure. The wine shows deep, rich color and intense fruit characters of black cherry, cassis and black licorice in the nose. Big big big yet balanced and capable of aging with great success to the patient winelover.
