Silky, striking, Syrah. The nose is lush yet complex, brimming with sumptuous black fruit shaded by white pepper, meat, and savory herbs. The Va Piano Syrah is pure silk in your mouth, unwinding flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, black currant, and black cherry (that's a lot of dark fruit!). The sweet fruit gives over to cola spice, minerals and a savory note, with just the tiniest bit of tannin present. We continue to be more wowed by Justin's Syrahs with each vintage-the 2005 is easily the best so far. Highly Recommended by Avalon-a July Northwest Big Reds Club selection.

Winemaker Notes
The 2005 Syrah is a 20- barrel lot blend of Portteus Vineyard, Lewis Vineyard, End of Ranch Rd (Red Mt) as well as Va Piano Estate Vineyard. Aromas of blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, olive, plum, cherry cola, bacon and mineral followed by a long concentrated finish that lingers forever. The vineyards selected for this Syrah show the pure expression of the Syrah grape grown in Washington State. The Portteus Syrah shows intense flavors of mineral and bacon, the Lewis Vineyard offers the plum, black cherry and cherry cola and the Red Mountain Syrah adds layers of dark red fruit and beautiful bold tannin structure. The Va Piano Estate fruit contributes ultra fine tannins, black olive aromas with a creamy rich finish.
The Winemaker on the 2005 Vintage
This is the vintage I will be telling stories about to my great grandchildren. The growing season started out fairly warm. However, some cool weather in June slowed growth down in the vineyard allowing the clusters to reach full ripeness without the high sugars. Warm weather returned in July and we ended the year with above average degree days. Thanks to this perfect combination of warm summer days and cool autumn temperatures our 2005 harvest yielded extremely high quality grapes.
