I had a 2006 Jacob a few weeks ago and I'm savoring the memory. We had it with a perfectly roasted leg of lamb encrusted with hazelnuts and sauced with an Oregon truffle gravy. OMG. But even compared to the fantastic wild truffles, the hit component of the meal was the wine.

Laura's wines tend to be a bit backward when they are first released. Rightly, she cellars them longer than many wineries. And with that bit of extra cellaring, they rock. Her three Pinots - Jacob, Rachel, and St. James - remind me of the Pinots made by Mike Etzel of Beaux Freres - very classic, very elegant, yet there's weight and roundness, and tremendous complexity.

Volkman seems destined to become one of those small wineries that doesn't need to advertise or submit wines to the critics. With each vintage release, she sells more of her wines immediately - leaving a small amount for Avalon to offer our customers, thank you Laura!

The Jacob, the"biggest" of her three Pinots, is positively hedonistic this time around. Dark fruit - blackberry, black raspberry, black cherry and black plum - fill the mouth with flavor. Somehow she manages to combine a lush, mouth filling abundance of big flavors with elegant hints of spice, mineral and toast. A sweet, fresh floral scent echoes in the long finish. - Jean

From the winery - The Jacob Pinot Noir is estate grown fruit from the East Block of our vineyard, where the sun's early ray's play a role in ripening and flavors. The clones planted are Dijon 777, 115, and 114 on rootstock 101-14. Generally bigger in style with toasty robust dark fruit components. Barrel aged on the lees in 50% new French oak. Production: 120 cases Alc. 13.7%

2009 Wine Advocate - 90+ points - The 2009 Jacob Estate Pinot Noir like the Rachel Estate was aged for 10 months in 35% new French oak. It proffers slightly darker fruit and a bouquet of balsam wood, cinnamon, clove, rose petal, and assorted red fruits. On the palate it displays finesse and refinement, slightly less volume than the Rachel Estate but a bit more structure. It is likely to fill out a bit more over the next 1-2 years and it will drink well through 2019. - Jay Miller

2008 Vintage Tasting Notes

The Laura Volkman Jacob Pinot noir 08 is powerful, complex and elegant. Blackberry, cherry, rose petal and violet perfume usher in potent flavors of black raspberry, cherry compote, and savory spices. Concentrated and sensuous, it lingers and shows even more complexity in a long, silky finish. - Jean

A big bold statement from a winemaker with a small vineyard, from which she makes all of her 500 cases total production of four wines.

2008 Wine Advocate - 91 points - The 2008 Pinot Noir Jacob Estate displays an enticing perfume of balsam wood, spice box, rose petal, incense, cherry, and raspberry. Elegant and easygoing on the palate but with good grip, this medium-bodied effort is jam-packed with spicy red fruits. It has good volume and balance leading to a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it from 2012 to 2020. - Jay Miller

2007 Vintage Tasting Notes

A delicious Burgundian style Pinot Noir that boasts of dark berry and cherry with graham on a long lingering finish. - Laura Volkman

Moderately light reddish-purple in color. More intensity and richness with more tannins than the Rachel Estate. Not as plush or big-boned as the 2006 vintage but plenty to like. Flamboyant scents of black cherries and black raspberries with hints of oak and cigar box. Packed with dark berry and stone fruit flavors augmented nicely with toasty oak. Hints of citrus peel, cola, root beer and spice add interest. Like all of Laura Volkman wines, the finish has remarkable persistence. A more masculine interpretation of the vineyard that is singing nicely now. - Rusty Gaffney, PinotFile
