2007 - Washington's First "Classic" Vintage
Wine Spectator 95-s

Mark Ryan, Gilbert Cellars

Last Call - Owen Roe 1973 Block Red Willow Cab 07

-

David Autrey, Westrey Wines

Wine Spectator rated Washington's 2007 vintage 95-s, making it a
WS "classic" - a first for Washington.

-

The best 2007 Washington reds combine size with sophistication. The wines are polished while having lush, big-bruiser flavors Washington is famous for. The stellar quality of the 2007 vintage is a big boost for Washington's wineries and a reason to make room in your cellar.

-

Mark Ryan's wines have a huge cult following. Mark's brash Washington reds keep improving and his prices remain fair. Classics Dead Horse and Long Haul are universally described big and ripe, labels which Mark agrees with wholeheartedly.

-

Promising new wineries continue to appear in Washington State, but most of them start with young-vine fruit. Not so with Gilbert Cellars. Their Doc Stewart Estate Vineyard was planted in the 1970's and produces awesome Cabernet. Gilbert's inaugural releases are all under $35 and smack-you-upside-the-head good.

-

McKinley Springs offers old vine reds at reduced prices this month, made with fruit from their Horse Heaven Hills vineyard.

Mark Ryan Dead Horse Red 07 - Massive wine with loads of personality - licorice, sweet oak, cassis, and milk chocolate with crystalized ginger. The palate largely follows the nose, has loads of freshness and structured tannins, with black fruit, cedar and tobacco carrying the finish. Yummy now, but certainly ageable. - Adrienne

-

Made from 100% Ciel du Cheval Vineyard fruit. 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot.

A beautiful scent of pine resin balances gobs of red and black fruits on the nose. An expansive melange of sweet blackberries, blueberries, black cherries, and minerals. Nicely integrated oak and tannins complement the rich strawberry and cinnamon note on the finish. This is a contender for best-value Washington Cabernet. - Marcus

Mark's best Long Haul yet, from Washington state's outstanding 2007 vintage. Dense and hefty, the Long Haul opens with bright aromas of strawberry, pie cherry, and crushed black pepper before delving into darker notes of black cherry, plum, and blackberry jam. Baking chocolate, earth, sweet herbs, and espresso add depth on the finish.

-

The 07 Long Haul is tightly wound and built for the cellar. If drinking now, decant extensively or try it on day two! - Marcus

-

66% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc for one of Washington's best vineyards, Ciel du Cheval in Red Mountain.

Burly and inky blackberry dominates with a floral-lavender vein and a lush, gamey streak. Bitter cocoa, plum, and fresh acidity add character to this excellent example of Northwest Malbec. - Marcus

Owen Roe 1973 Block Red Willow Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 07 is an awesome, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon expressed in the varietal's purest, finest form. Its mouthwatering bouquet of incense oak, truffle, saddle leather, cocoa, pencil lead, sweet tobacco, and ripe blackberry bursts from the glass.

-

Sumptuous, and silky textured, well-structured layers of blackberry and cassis fruit explode in the mouth, with black licorice, bittersweet cocoa, dried flowers, and a hint of eucalyptus adding depth and weight. A 30+ second finish of blackberry jam and smoke adds to its power and breadth. A gorgeous quaff now, though bit tightly wound, we suggest cellaring for 5 years before drinking, and holding for up to 15. This is the first vintage of the 1973 Block for Owen Roe. - Jean

Old Vine Cabernet at a bargain price. Made from the first vines Andrews Horse Heaven Ranch planted in 1980.

-

Full bodied, big black cherry, spice and mellow, vanilla tinged finish. Easy to enjoy, round and full in the mouth. This wine holds up well in comparison to many $30 Washington Cabs. It's an older vintage and has improved with time in the cellar. - Jean
