Review:

The darkest of the 2012 Westrey Pinots, with a commanding, saturated aromatic profile of dark berries, incense, dried flowers and orange peel. Stunning, intense huckleberry and sweet black cherry create a "wow" sensation, while a juiciness adds levity. You feel the fruit structure build through the finish, echoing with white pepper. I recommend cellaring this for 3-4 years and it will certainly last much longer. - Marcus

2010 vintage notes: A true eye-opener of the year for me. I gave in and stopped trying to describe the aromas - I just embraced the exotic and evocative perfume. The velvety-textured flavors have breadth and depth, flowing with black berry and black cherry, resinous and savory, I couldn't put the glass down.

As I was writing my note I realized it had been 5 minutes since I had a sip and I could still taste the bead of black berry preserves flecked with dried thyme and pepper. Production was WAY down in 2010, which adds extra urgency to grab this. It's the best-priced Justice Vineyard designate (and as good or better than its peers). - Marcus

As you would expect, Justice showed beautiful, velvety fruit and a lovely earth component that we don’t usually see in Justice fruit. Maybe this is because Justice vineyard has matured (it was planted in 1999), and the roots have finally tapped into the sedimentary layer underneath the volcanic topsoil. As was the case everywhere, crop was very light, and production is down by half. The upside is a wine of great density and complexity. We find layers of exotic spice complementing this vintage of Justice, alongside the ever-present marionberry/blackberry fruit. As always, Mimi and Ted Casteel brought us impeccably-grown fruit and, along with the excellent quality of the vintage, this wine will rock your world. - the winery

Justice Vineyard is owned by Bethel Heights and is located next to the Bethel Heights Vineyard in the Eola Amity Hills. A vineyard at its prime, at 14 years of age it produces detailed, exceptional grapes. The vineyard is LIVE certified organic.

2009 Vintage

2009 Wine Advocate - 90 points - The 2009 Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard (owned by Bethel Heights) was made with 27% whole clusters. More expressive aromatically than the Willamette Valley cuvee, it is a savory, easy-going, nicely proportioned Pinot with good volume and length. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. - Jay Miller

This is Westrey’s sixth release from the Justice Vineyard. Justice is located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA next to Bethel Heights Vineyard. Situated at 600 feet, the rows face due South on Nekia soil with a sedimentary subsoil. Our two acres of densely-planted Pinot consist of 50% Dijon 667 on Riparia and 50% Dijon 777 also on Riparia. Harvested on October 6th, the 2009 blend consists of 46% 667 and 54% 777. On the nose one is invited to taste through aromas of raspberry and blueberry fruit, earth and a hint of a floral note. The entry shows bright berry fruit, with good weight and a refined structure. Because we had excellent stem ripeness from the long cool growing season, we utilized 27% whole cluster to accentuate the spicy character of the fruit; and to add additional structure to an already superb wine. This thirteen-barrel lot had four new barrels, three one-year-old barrels with the balance neutral wood. It was racked once in the spring with inert gas after an indigenous malo-lactic and bottled unfined and unfiltered in September of 2010. 321 cases & 7 cases of magnums were produced. - the winery

2008 Vintage Tasting Notes

A knockout wine from Oregon's superstar 2008 vintage. The other Justice Vineyard designates sell for $50+, making this a remarkable value.

Flashy black fruit perfume leads into a burst of blackberry and huckleberry, plus mouthwatering acidity ideally balanced by a lingering sweetness of fruit and dried herbs. Like the best 08 Pinots, Justice 08 has fantastic structure and should be decanted if you're drinking now. So fun to have in the cellar! - Marcus

This is Westrey’s fifth release from the lovely Justice Vineyard. Justice is located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA next to Bethel Heights Vineyard. Bethel Heights’ father/daughter team Ted and Mimi Casteel farm this wonderful site. Situated at 600 feet, the rows face due South on Nekia soil. Our two acres of densely planted Pinot from Justice consist of 50% Dijon 667 on Riparia and 50% Dijon 777 on Riparia. These blocks yielded 1.88 tons per acre from this vintage. The 2008 blend consists of 40% 667 and 60% 777.

This ten-barrel lot had three new barrels, a lone one-year-old barrel, with the balance in neutral wood. It was racked once in the spring with inert gas after an indigenous malo-lactic fermentation and bottled unfined and unfiltered in September of 2009. 243 cases produced.

Westrey Pinot noir Justice Vineyard 08 is the fifth vintage of this single vineyard Pinot noir made from Bethel Heights' Justice Vineyard fruit. Westrey is establishing itself as one of Oregon's premier wineries.

2007 Vintage Tasting Notes

Westrey Justice 07 has captivating and bright scents of raspberries, wood spice, and light toast. A supple, elegant Pinot, the Justice's red raspberry core picks up darker shades of fruit, dried herbs and Earl Grey tea on the finish.

Winemaker Amy Wesselman says this is the kind of wine that curls up in your lap and purrs. It's opulent, open, and delicious right now. Silky tannins, black fruit, and complexity make this a wine everyone loves.
