Review:

Aromas of red berries, evergreen with pinches of vanilla bean lead to a plushly textured palate of spicy red and black berries. - Marcus

2009 vintage notes: The Reserve barrels were carefully chosen for their expression of their vineyard of origin and their aging potential. In 2009 the wine is a blend of 50% La Cantera (20 year-old own-rooted Pommard), and 50% Oracle Vineyard (115, Pommard and several other clones). The wine displays a lovely floral, marionberry scent. These aromas are complemented by mixed berries, vanilla sweetness, coffee from the oak, and a predominant floral character. On the palate the wine is mouth-filling and supple, possessing rich fruit and enough acidity in the long finish to make a balanced and complete wine. - the winery

Westrey absolutely crushed it with their 2008 wines - the Reserve is the final 08 Pinot noir release from Westrey. Spicy dried rose petal, morel, a touch of sweet blueberry compote, fresh black berry, a pinch of dried herbs and licorice, all in balance. The finish builds and shows great backbone - a perfect complement to the sweet fruit that glides underneath. - Marcus

Marcus said it best (above) but I just have to reiterate - this is a great wine and a great price. I tried to take the sample bottle home when he wasn't looking, but put it back - I know he wants to taste it again after 24 hours to see how it holds together. But wow. As my nephew would say - this wine is SICK! - Jean

The wine displays intense raspberry, pie cherry and spice aromas. These aromas are complemented by red currents, vanilla sweetness, coffee from the oak, and a predominant floral character. On the palate the wine is mouth-filling and supple, possessing rich fruit and enough acidity in the long finish to make a balanced and complete wine. - Amy

International Wine Cellars' Josh Raynolds - "Bright red. Pungent, expressive aromas of strawberry and raspberry preserves, white pepper, spicecake, rose and blond tobacco. Round and silky, with a firm tannic spine shaping the spicy red and dark berry flavors. The tannins fade into the sweet fruit on the finish, which strongly echoes the darker fruit qualities and leaves spice and floral notes behind. I'd hold onto this for at least a few more years." 92 points.

From the winery - The 2008 Reserve barrels were carefully chosen for their expression of their vineyard of origin and their aging potential. Special care was taken to produce an ageworthy wine from this spectacular vintage. In 2008 the wine is a blend of 30% Momtazi Vineyard, 50% La Cantera Vineyard, and 20% Oracle Vineyard.

At harvest the individual lots were given an approximately five-day cold-soak prior to fermentation. Each lot fermented separately with a combination of indigenous yeast and a commercial yeast imported from Burgundy. The fermentation lasted an average of 14 days for each, and pressing occurred at dryness. At pressing, the wine was sent directly to barrel to maintain a maximum amount of lees. There it completed an indigenous malo-lactic fermentation. In May it received an inert gas racking from barrel to barrel.

The finished wine was bottled in late September, without fining or filtration, to allow the wine’s character to fully show through. The 2008 blend was aged in 25% new wood and 20% one-year old, with the balance coming from neutral wood

Previous Vintage Tasting Notes

Westrey Reserve Pinot noir 07 is the winery's top wine. It is made from the best barrels from several vineyards. A veritable fruit salad of rich red and black berries and stone fruit greets the taster. Silky tannins and top notes of vanilla and spice add even more complexity and interest. Amazing wine at a more than fair price.
