The 2011 is immediately likable when opened, sporting a nose of dark berries and cedar that adds cherry and cinnamon on the palate. The texture is supple and seamless, resulting in no small way from the 18 months of barrel aging (a rarity among $25 Oregon Pinot noir). You could slip this into a line-up of “reserve” wines and it would hold its own - actually, I bet it would show up at least half the competition. Instead of 2010’s paltry 75 case production, we were gifted with an increase to 200 cases, as yields were significantly better.

2010 notes: An outstanding value. This is packed with rich cherry, blue and black berry flavors, accented by cinnamon and thyme. It is beautifully structured to age for a decade or more.

Most wineries, rightfully, ask big bucks for their old vine Pinots. Not Whistling Dog's Tom and Celeste Symonette. This tiny 3-barrel ($75 case) production comes from their dry-farmed, 30 year-old block of Heritage clones (Pommard and Wadenswil). One of the very few sub-$25 Pinots deserving of our Reserve Pinot Noir Club. The only $24 thing about this Pinot is the price tag.

Previous vintage notes: The 2009 NSV Estate Heritage Blocks Pinot was produced from own-rooted, dry-farmed Pommard and Wadenswil clones planted in 1981; the wine was made using 100% whole berry grapes, native yeasts, and minimalist winemaking techniques. Aged nineteen months in barrel, using 50% new oak; 17 months in bottle upon release.

Nuestro Sueño Vineyard is Whistling Dog’s estate vineyard, located on the southwestern slopes of the Eola-Amity Hills in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Planted in the 1980‘s, it is one of the original vineyards planted in the AVA, and is dry-farmed using sustainable farming practices.
