Review:

Wine Advocate 92 points: White Rose’s 2010 Pinot Noir Winemaker’s Cuvee represents half White Rose estate and half Luciole vineyard fruit, in aggregate two-thirds whole cluster. An attention-getting nose of rose petal, black tea, blackberry, licorice, and sassafras anticipates this Pinot’s smoky, pungent, but admirably juicy palate performance. Tart berry skin edge; saliva-liberating salinity; and persistent smokiness inform the sappy and invigorating cling of its impressively persistent finish. There is a sense of clarity of fruit as well as animated exchange of flavors that I didn’t perceive as having been attained by the other White Rose bottlings I tasted on this occasion. I imagine this being worth following for at least a decade.

2009 Vintage

The Winemaker’s Cuvee is a 50-case barrel selection from the White Rose Block 1 and Bell Road Vineyards. It was fermented with 60% whole clusters (100% of the White Rose and 20% of the Bell Road) and aged for 15 months in 100% neutral French oak. It is slightly darker in color than the previous cuvees while offering up notes of truffle, chocolate, cherry, raspberry, and floral aromas. Firm on the palate and quite dense, it displays layered fruit, a slightly reticent personality, and good balance. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring which is likely to fill out the wine’s frame. - Jay Miller

Winemaker Jesus Guillen chose two of his favorite barrels, one from Block 1 of the White Rose Vineyard and one from the Bell Road Vineyard, to craft this cuvee. The resulting Pinot noir is a distinctively complex wine with depth and clarity.
