Wine Advocate rating 89 points: "Kevin Mott, Woodward Canyon’s winemaker since the summer of 2003, was compelled to produce the 2004 Chardonnay entirely from Celilo Vineyard fruit as the estate’s Chardonnay vines (generally a component of the blend) had been wiped out by the freeze. Aged in 25% new oak, it reveals an appealingly pure and tangy nose of pears. Deep, lively, and focused, this excellent wine offers flavors of apples and pears that linger in its extensive as well as seamless finish. Drink it over the next 4-5 years."

From the winery:

Fully mature fruit shows in the mouth; the texture is smooth and silky. The finish is complex, generous and long. This wine may be consumed now but it will benefit substantially with a year in bottle and will continue to improve for another several years. Pacific northwest seafood is the reason we make this wine. Enjoy!

Detailed Info, Previous Vintage Notes, Reviews:

From the winery:

This 2004 Chardonnay was produced almost entirely from Wente clone chardonnay grown at Celilo Vineyard in the Columbia River Gorge; Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard chardonnay made up the rest. The grapes were harvested by hand, sorted and whole cluster pressed. The yield was less than 3 tons per acre with all grapes harvested by the middle of October; given that 2004 was slightly cooler than 2003.

This wine was fermented in barrels from Louis Latour, Sirugue and Francois Freres. It shows beautiful concentrated flavors of ripe pear, apple and peach balanced with perfect acidity. Whole cluster pressing gives beautifully pure fruit, which integrates perfectly with notes of vanilla, cream and toasted hazelnut. Finally the oak is more understated by our choice and is in delightful proportion with the alcohol and fruit.
