As is the case most every year, the Malbec is like a favorite son: a bit spoiled, it can do no wrong. We love it; we admire it; it never lets us down. Yummy from the get-go, it is still yummy today: very floral, very blackberry, with lush dark fruit in the mouth and a long, soft finish. Over... In previous vintages I've called it a slurper, but this year it seems to have taken on a bit of gravitas.
"As an experiment, we aged the wine in two-thirds (previously filled) American oak barrels, which seem to lend it additional sweetness without overpowering its pure fruit with slutty toast. It's structured, but you don't notice it. You could drink this now or put it down for a couple of years. Either way, we expect it to remain a favorite of women's book groups." - Andrew
2003 Vintage Tasting Notes We tried this wine at the store yesterday, and it was such a hit! A crowd pleaser, this is a big fruit bomb with an exotic scent of ripe black cherries and currants, sandlalwood incense, and pepper. The wine is almost black in color, and completely opaque. The flavors are of black cherry, cassis, blackberry liqueur, spicy incense, and black plum. It's super-velvet on the palate, with a long, long finish. This is a huge, mouthwatering wine for big foods, strong cheeses, or by itself as a sipping wine in front of a roaring fire on a cold night. Delightful, and it's really nice that the price is in line with equivalent Argentinian Malbecs - thanks Andrew!One of the traditional "Bordeaux varietals", Malbec has characteristics that fall somewhere between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A midseason ripener, it can bring very deep color, ample tannin, and a particular plum-like flavor component to add complexity to claret blends. As a stand alone wine, it is black in color, with plush plum, black cherry, and toasty notes.
