A Limerick About $20 Oregon Pinot noir

Slurping down Oregon Pinot
The finest of New World Vino
By Glass or by Case
Put a smile on your Face
It's better than gambling on Keno!

How to get the point across about a new wine, without repeating the same old words? It's a perpetual challenge. To allow a bit more leeway in our wine writing, we're introducing Avalon's casual Friday emails. It's our version of slacks and a Polo.

Since our website started (in 1996) we've tried some crazy stuff. I wrote an entire article describing wine with surfing lingo (unbelievably bad). We've compared wine to the MIR space station, tiny birds, monsters, weightlifters, old hippies, swimsuits, football players, well, you get the drift.

Avalon Wine

In the grand Avalon tradition of trying something completely different, and because Marcus is out of the office and can't stop me(!) we're selling wine with limericks today. And we challenge you to write your own limerick about Northwest wine! Prize? A free bottle of any of today's featured wines. And your limerick memorialized in the pages of northwest-wine.com.

To enter, email your limerick to jean@northwest-wine.com. Marcus's wife Alison, who teaches poetry at Linn Benton Community College, will be the judge. We'll announce the winner on the home page of the website. Entry deadline is Wednesday, September 23 for consideration in this week's contest.

Better than Keno $20 Oregon Pinot noirs

Avalon Wine

Broadley Vineyard
Willamette Valley
Pinot noir 08
$19.95/$17.95

Robert Parker's
Wine Advocate 90 Points

"Broadley's 2008 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley was bottled in June, 2009. A blend of three vineyards, it is a preview of just how good the 2008 vintage is in Willamette Valley. It offers up the superb perfume characteristic of the vintage; unlike 2007 in which spice notes dominate the aromatics, in 2008 fruit and floral aromas have the upper hand. On the palate it has layered, succulent cherry and raspberry fruit with excellent depth and balancing acidity. It has enough structure to evolve for several years but there is no need to defer your gratification. It is a sensational value in Pinot Noir".

Dark opaque, unfiltered, the scents, upon opening, are of black raspberry and spice. Flavors are juicy, with big black fruit. Blackberry and a bit of black cherry are refreshing, with a racy natural acidity. Ready to drink, approachable, but balanced, this wine will age for 2-5 years. - the winery

Patricia Green Cellars
"Dollar Bills Only"
Pinot noir 08
$16.74/$15.07

The Patty Green Dollar Bills Only 08 is definitely a crowd pleaser, but also a wine that a europhile palate wouldn't snub for the money.

The first hit on this wine is a sweet, toasty earthiness with some notes of morel mushrooms in the background. It opens up to loads of black berry and black cherry, with some floral notes hinting at cherry blossom, but also a lot of sweet orange and spice and a touch of cocoa powder.

The texture is creamy, and tastes of mixed berry pie filling and cinnamon sticks, again with that natural sweetness. The finish is long and reminds me of a raspberry/blackberry marmalade with a nice touch of thyme and oregano thrown in.

Overall this wine made me think of Christmas, with the orange, cinnamon, and pie filling flavors, and always that pinot sweetness. - Adrienne

Evesham Wood
Willamette Valley
Pinot noir 08
$17.95/$16.16

Evesham Wood Pinot noir Willamette Valley 08 - Swirling the Evesham Wood Willamette Valley Pinot noir 08 in the glass and taking a first big breath - cedar, red raspberry, nutmeg, and a hint of lavender arise. Subsequent inhales add rose petal, incense, and herbs to the mix.

A first sip boasts juicy red raspberry and red cherry flavors. Savoring the experience, sweet nutmeg, cinnamon, white pepper, licorice, and cranberry emerge. At the edge of perception, wisps of lavender fields, tiny wild roses, moss, and earth add threads of flavor to the wine fabric's weft. White pepper and cedar persist in the finish. - Jean

Avalon Wine

Westrey Wines
Oracle Vineyard
Pinot noir 07
$20.95/$28.86

Gorgeous. Vinous, spicy aromas of dark berries and black cherries pull you into to this seductive Pinot. An expressive array of creamy mixed berries and cherries is decorated with sweet earth, nutmeg, and minerals on the finish that just doesn't quit. Both complex and easy-going, this Pinot was an easy choice for Avalon's Reserve Pinot Noir Club. One of the standouts of the 2007 vintage.

Westrey Pinot noir Oracle Vineyard 07 is the Westrey's estate wine, made from Amy and David's own vineyard. David and Amy grow the grapes and make the wine together, combining their skills into an original vision. Considering the very high quality of the wine, this is a blow you away value. - Jean

Westrey Wines Justice Vineyard
Pinot noir 07
$20.95/$18.86

Westrey Justice 07 has captivating and bright scents of raspberries, woodspice, and light toast. A supple, elegant Pinot, the Justice's red raspberry core picks up darker shades of fruit, dried herbs and Earl Grey tea on the finish. The other Justice Vineyard designates sell for $50, making this a remarkable value.

Winemaker Amy Wesselman says this is the kind of wine that curls up in your lap and purrs. It's opulent, open, and delicious right now. Silky tannins, black fruit, and complexity make this a wine everyone loves.

There's a large number of
new Northwest wines.
