A very hot growing season in 03 made the vintage a test of winemaking ability, and Brian shows his skills with this beautiful wine. The scent is initially of cherries, vanilla, and a hint of earthy tobacco. The flavors are dominated by red and black cherry, blackcerry, fresh turned earth, and sweet licorice. The long finish shows lots of vanilla, caramel, and finely integrated oak. It has a streak of racy acidity and an elegant complexity that separates it from other OR wines from the vintage. From the winery: "Our "entry level" pinot for 2003 is a combination of fruit from Bella Vida (40%), Wahle (25%), and Belle Pente Estate (35%) Vineyards. With a good blend of soils, elevations, and vine age, this is a classic Willamette Valley Pinot Noir which expresses the best characteristics of the vintage. A medley of ripe small red and black fruits dominate the nose and follow through on the palate. The wine has good structure and concentration without seeming heavy, and retains the bright fruit character that is so elusive in this vintage. A relatively light barrel regime (20% each new, one year old, and two year s old, with the balance three to six years old) provides background accents while allowing the fruit to shine through. Once again this wine offers very good value, comparable in quality to many wines costing far more. Enjoy it now and over the next few years."
