Wine Spectator says: "Ste. Michelle's Merlots from Indian Wells always deliver crisp, lively fruit character. This one is bright and juicy, bursting with fresh blackberry, currantand a touch of spicy oak, all of it echoing beautifully on the finish. Drink now through 2005." -H.S.
This Merlot showcases bright red currant and cherry fruit aromas with hints of blueberry, anise and toast. On the palate, the wine delivers flavors of black cherry, blackberry, mocha and spice with soft tannins.
Mild winter and spring weather continued into a long, warm dry and stable growing season in 2001. September harvest conditions were ideal with very warm, clear days and cool nights. Berry size was smaller than usual, producing fruit with ripe varietal characteristics. Overall, fruit quality was excellent, contributing to the state's fourth consecutive outstanding vintage.
