Forgeron Cellars is located in Walla Walla. Forgeron, a french word for blacksmith, was chosen in part because the location of the winery is on the former site of a blacksmith shop. But there's more to it than that: Forgeron also refers to artisans who build with their hands and head winemaker and part owner Marie-Eve Gilla brings that artisan philosophy to her winemaking and her vision for Forgeron Cellars. Marie-Eve Gilla studied winemaking in her native France and attended the University of Dijon where she earned a masters degree in enology and viticulture. She came to the United States in 1991 intending to stay a few months but was enchanted by the winemaking opportunities afforded by Eastern Washington and decided to stay. She eventually met and married Gilles Nicault, also a native of France, and Director of Winemaking and Viticulture at Long Shadows, a collection of ultra-premium wineries run by some of the top winemakers from around the world. Forgeron Cellars gets their grapes from numerous vineyards located in the Columbia Valley appellation with a focus on the best that Washington has to offer.
