Mark Ryan
Dead Horse Cabernet Sauvignon $48.95

Avalon Favorite

The nose erupts with sweet blackberries cherries, followed by nuances of baking spice. The supple but powerful entry bursts with huge blackberry, cassis, and cherry fruit, showing exceptional purity. Notes of leather, dark flowers, and pepper appear on the finish along with persistent sweet black fruit. There's an elegance rarely found in such a big wine; the oak is perfectly integrated. We all like bold wines now and then, so decant and drink your first bottle now and stash the rest away for the next decade.

The Dead Horse is our favorite Mark Ryan wine several years running. Wine critics seem to agree, and with a Wine Spectator score of 90 points for the 2005, we're sure the 2006 Dead Horse won't be galloping for long!

Long Shadows
Pedestal Merlot 05 $57.95

Wine Advocate (Robert Parker) 94 Points
Pedestal Merlot 05 received 94 points from Wine Advocate (Parker) in July 2008. They said: "The 2005 Pedestal features the peripatetic Michel Rolland. His wine is 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc aged for 22 months in 85% new French oak. Deep crimson-colored, it offers an enticing perfume of toasty new oak, pencil lead, spice box, clove, allspice, red currants and black cherry. Seamless on the palate, the wine has gobs of ripe, savory flavors, well-concealed tannin, excellent aging potential, and a long, pure finish. It will provide much pleasure between 2012 and 2025."

Owen Roe
Dubrul Cabernet Sauvignon 06 $71.95

2005 Vintage Wine Spectator 95 Points
Owen Roe Dubrul Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 06 opens with aromas of caramel-inflected rich, dark cherries, ground cinnamon, and barrel toast that usher in a concentrated palate of plush, dark currants, black cherries, and blackberries. Savory notes of vanilla bean, barrel spice, dried sage leaf and mint come together with sappy fruit, fine tannin, and Dubrul Vineyard earthiness on the finish, exuding power. Best to cellar this for another couple years, then drink over the next decade.

Washington State's Dubrul Vineyard, rehabilitated and made famous by David O'Reilly of Owen Roe, is the source for this distinguished wine. Owen Roe's Dubrul Vineyard wines are the winery's most precious, powerful, intense, and age well into the next decade. The Owen Roe Dubrul Cab has earned a spot on the Northwest's mantel for best Cabernets. Wine Spectator gave the 2003 vintage 94 points, The 2004 93 points, and the 2005 vintage 95 points.

Trust Cellars
Syrah 06 $ 29.955

Highly recommended by Avalon Wine

Deliciously pure Syrah, signaled by aromas of black fruit, bacon fat, and white pepper. Deep, juicy flavors of black cherry and black raspberry fill your mouth and sail through the finish, picking up hints of campfire smoke, minerals, and cola spice. The 06 Trust offers refinement and balance at a time when so many new world Syrahs are over-the-top. An excellent value, and an Avalon Big Reds Club selection.

Fall Line
Cabernet Sauvignon 06 $30.95

Wine Advocate (Robert Parker) 92 Points
"The nose offers up notes of vanilla bean, coconut, black currants, and blackberry liqueur. Layered and ripe, bordering on opulent, it nicely conceals enough tannin to carry the wine through another 4-5 years of evolution. This concentrated, lengthy effort should attain its peak by 2013 and remain at that level through 2026."
The best new mid-priced Cabernet from Washington. Pure cassis aromas and flavors, mixing with black berries, plums, black cherries, and baking spices. A lingering sweetness on the finish is accented by subtle sage leaf and integrated tannins. The Fall Line 06 is versatile as a sipper or with any hearty meal--it has perfect balance and refinement, but plenty of gushing, yummy fruit. An Avalon Big Reds Club selection and highly recommended. - Avalon

Fielding
Cabernet Sauvignon 06 $39.95

Wine Spectator 93 Points and "HOT WINE"
The Fielding Hills Cabernet Sauvignon 06 received 93 points in the 11-13-08 Wine Spectator Insider and "HOT WINES": " Smooth and silky, offering a plush mouthful of lavender-accented black currant, cherry and espresso flavors that weave together through the long, vibrant finish. Has great stature and a welcoming feel. Drink now through 2016. From Washington."

The nose is playful, with red berries, black cherry candy and caramel. Then POW! Fielding Hills Cabs capture the essence of Cabernet, with a dense cassis core accented by sweet black cherry. Great structure and balance. The caressing finish echoes with dried herb, licorice, earth, and generous black fruit.

Paul Gregutt's Top 100 Washington wines for 2006 included the Fielding Hills Cabernet Sauvignon 04 at the NUMBER THREE SPOT. The only wines ranked higher were from Quilceda Creek and Cayuse.
