Kiona Ice Wine 375 ml
Highly recommended - one of the highest rated Washington ice wines and a great price.
2008 Vintage Tasting Notes
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92 points!
"The 2008 Chenin Blanc Ice Wine is a winner (as usual). Lovely aromas of melon and tropical fruits are followed by a very sweet, bracing elixir that offers considerable complexity and a few years of aging potential. It is one of the great values in sweet dessert wine. Kiona Vineyards and Winery has been producing wine since 1980 (and growing grapes for considerably longer than that). It has long been a puzzle because its grapes are in great demand, but Kiona itself has had difficulty taking advantage of their superior farming. The winery interestingly has always done its best work with sweeter wines (Riesling and Chenin Blanc). Suggested Retail $40 - $50." - Jay Miller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Highly recommended by Avalon Wine - our most popular ice wine from Washington, year after year. Wonderful flavors. Wine Press NW rating "Outstanding". A fascinating dessert wine with remarkably concentrated white peach, apple, and apricot flavors. Some burnt caramel flavors meld with the big acids and fruit flavors.
2007 Vintage Tasting Notes
Kiona Ice Wine 07 received 93 points from Wine Advocate (Parker) 7/08.
They said: "The 2007 Ice Wine is a Chenin Blanc-Riesling blend with 20% residual sugar. The aromatics are quite heavenly with notes of peach, tangerine, mango, and kiwi. On the palate the wine is smooth textured, racy, and nicely balanced. It should evolve for quite some time given the acid backbone. It is also a fabulous value in sweet wine."
Wine Spectator 90 points
"Very sweet and rich in texture, offering honey and wildflower aromas and flavors that persist nicely on the unctuous finish. Drink now through 2007. 500 cases made."(HS)
Wine Press NW says: "Washington is not as well known as British Columbia for producing great ice wines, partly because Washington doesn't always have the proper conditions for it.
As an example, last fall, Chateau Ste. Michelle picked just its second ice wine harvest in its 70-year history.
But Kiona Vineyards Winery in Benton City manages to get a Chenin Blanc ice wine nearly every year because one area of its vineyard tends to freeze on a consistent basis. The result is a dessert wine that is much more delicate than those from British Columbia, and this example offers aromas and flavors of limes, orange peels and clover honey. This wine already has won two gold medals (L.A. County Fair and San Diego National Wine Competition) and was rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine."
1998 Vintage Tasting Notes
From the winery: "Produced from grapes frozen on the vine, Ice Wine embodies the spirit and essence of the grape by concentrating the sugar and flavor and leaving the water component of the juice behind in the form of ice.
Phenomenal success with past vintages of ice wine and Late Harvest Wine made from the more traditional Riesling grape stretched demand past the ability of our vineyard to supply it. Not being afraid to experiment, Kiona produced 250 cases of 1989 ice wine from the more plentiful Chenin Blanc. The results were EXCITING! After multiple gold medals and smashing market success, Kiona has followed up with an impressive string of vintage ice wines. - the winery
