The 2002 Mystic Syrah disappeared off Avalon's shelves as soon as it was stocked. I like the 2003 better! More complex than many Northwest Syrahs, the Mystic opens with black cherries and currant followed by hints of ginseng root. Subtle, smokey bacon with a lively black pepper finish. Excuse me, did you say $22?! I'll take a case. -ml

A favorite Syrah, in any price range, from the NW. The wine is made exclusively from a tiny vineyard in the Columbia Gorge. The wine first impresses with a complex nose of cassis, black chery liqueur, cedar, and intriguing hints of caraway and herbs. Flavors again are surprising- in a most pleasant way- not a juicy fruit bomb, there's much more structure here, almost Bordeaux like- the tannins are full yet there's not a hint of dryness, just cedary oak, black berry, black cherry, and touches of licorice, and there's the hint of caraway seed again. A most pleasing wine, one that may interest even experienced and professional wine lovers. Something quite special. jy

Detailed Info, Previous Vintage Notes, Reviews:

From the winery: "Each year the fruit from this "Top Secret" little vineyard gets a little more robust. As the vines age the flavors are richer and deeper and the trademark black pepper spiciness becomes more pronounced. The wine is dark and inky again this year and is set off by nuances of plum and black licorice in both aroma and flavor, and enhanced by just a smidge more new toasty oak than last year. Careful not to overpower the lush natural fruit and spice of this Syrah, the oak rounds out the texture and captures that lingering pepperiness in the finish. The reviews so far suggest we have another crowd-pleaser on our hands."
