Four new 2008 Pinots
jumped off the counter
this week and demanded
Oregon Wine Pioneers Bethel Heights and Lange have 31 and 21 Oregon vintages under their belt (respectively). With all of their combined experience and the classic 2008 vintage, they continue to deliver rocking value Pinots.
Oregon Rising Stars Laura Volkman and Toluca Lane are tiny production, boutique wineries - they share winemaking space with a few others to help keep costs down. The 2008 vintage is Laura's third. Her St. James Pinot noir 08 is a terrific value, ready to enjoy now. Laura's wines are often compared to the Pinot noirs of Beaux Freres, where she trained.
Toluca Lane made a mere 191 cases of gutsy, beautiful estate-grown 08 Pinot noir. You know the wine tastes good, as co-owner Lane Crowther is a trained saucier and ran Bon Apetit Magazine's food testing program for several years!
While Adrienne is busy pricing new 2008 Pinots (above right) Marcus is glued to the phone ordering more!
"In the 2008's, you've got the best vintage
Oregon has ever produced, the kind of vintage
Oregon winemakers always hoped they could produce."
Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator.

Three bottles each of these four wines:
Willamette Valley Pinot noir 08 $26.95/$24.25
Yum! Aromas of vibrant red cherries, coffee, dark cocoa and raspberry cream. The palate has a creamy core framed by earth, berry and citrus notes. Bethel Heights consistently makes some of Oregon's finest wines. - Adrienne
Reserve Pinot noir 08 $29.95/$26.95
An amazing nose of licorice, plum and black cherry that carries through to the flavors, picking up raspberry and black tea. There's an ideal balance of fat, creamy fruit, juicy acidity, a touch of sweet herbs, and a hint of tannin. Deliciously drinkable right now, with the goods to last for years. That's my kind of Pinot! - Marcus
St. James Pinot noir 08 $24.95/$22.45
Lingers in your memory long after it's gone. Complex, perfumed, round and refreshing, the St. James 08 is expansive and gushing with dark berry, rose, and briar notes. A scant 110 cases made.
Pinot noir 08 $29.95/$26.95
Fantastic value in a "bigger" style Oregon Pinot. Silky blackberry, black currant, bright red cherry and a sweet violet note that pops towards the end. Deep, lingering vanilla spice, caramel, and cocoa round out the lush black fruit finish.
Sitting down to taste the 08 Toluca, we were unusually captivated by the dark fushia color in the glass. Turns out you can judge this book by its cover! Opened Tuesday, this was still fresh Thursday afternoon. Only 191 cases made. - Marcus
