Detailed Info, Previous Vintage Notes, Reviews:

From the winery: "This little piece of Balcombe Vineyard never fails to deliver the goods. Once again this as impressive as anything in the cellar. The combination of the Dundee Hills setting, with the thin, rocky soils in the block and the warm southern exposure create fruit that turns into wine showing rich, luxurious layers of fruit, rose petal and violet aromatics, minerally-laced finish and a structure that will hold it all together for a long time. We harvested Balcombe at just under 1.4 tons/acre in 2003 so there is a great deal of additional intensity from the low yields, however it does mean less wine from the Balcombe bottlings (although maybe more Notorious). As much as any wine we have or maybe have ever had this brings the best of the qualities we feel Oregon Pinot has to offer in terms of its ripeness, suppleness, texture and density and combines it in a package that at least tips its hat in the direction of Burgundy by being graceful, forceful and balanced. This is a gem. Aromatics of cherry liqueur, wet stone, toast, smoke and iron. Intensely concentrated flavors of the flesh of black cherries right at the pit followed by minerals and some sweet oak. Very concentrated and intense. The structure is firmer than that of the regular Balcombe bottling but less so than the Anden as the Dundee Hill quality comes through in providing the round, redolent quality that gives wines from this region some forward plushness. A terrific wine for now or years from now. Easily the most popular wine we make. 170 cases bottled."

2002 tasting notes:

The always first to go Patricia Green Cellars Pinot noir Balcombe 1B 02 continues the tradition with this vintage.

The wine has a silky texture and sensual viscosity in the mouth, with initial scents of toasted coffee bean lingering as the flavors of red cherry, raspberry, and cherry, cherry, cherry spread out in the mouth. A hint of burnt toast on the long warm finish adds a nice touch. Still quite closed in comparison to some of Patty's wines, this wine is one to cellar for at least 6 months to six years. Should be a long laster, with a well articulated tannic backbone.

2001 vintage notes:

From the winemakers: " We have decided, in an effort to show the site as distinctly as possible, to divide the bottlings of Balcombe up. This bottling is made up entirely of one of the five blocks in the vineyard. As in the 2000 vintage Block 1B tends to produce the darkest, deepest and most tannic fruit in the vineyard. There were only 7 barrels of this wine. The wine is incredibly dark in color and has a big nose of ripe, succulent black cherries, blueberries, mocha, iron, red spices and, depending on the barrel, well integrated sweet French oak. This is a fairly muscular, powerful wine with a deep mid-palate and fine tannins on the back of the wine. If you like them chewier, big and age-worthy this is your wine. It has characteristics that are in line with the normal bottling of Balcombe but we feel there is not only a greater sense of depth and strength in this wine but a greater sense of terroir as well. It all comes out to just about 165 cases of wine. This is EASILY our most popular wine."

Balcombe Vineyard is a 7.2 acre vineyard located on a southwest facing slope on Breyman Orchard Rd. in the Dundee Hills. It's situated among the vineyards of Domaine Serene and DOMaine Drouhin. Nice neighbors--!

The vineyard was planted in 1990 with the Pommard clone of Pinot Noir.
