Review:

95 points Tanzer:"Deep ruby. Explosive, seductively perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, incense, rose oil and smoky oak, with an Indian spice nuance building in the glass. Stains the palate with deeply pitched blackberry, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors that are enlivened and given spine by juicy acidity. Deftly plays power off of vivacity and shows a supple, fine-grained texture. Clings with remarkable tenacity on the finish, which is framed by velvety tannins that are subsumed by the wine's lush fruit. Is this the best wine I've ever had from this winery? Probably - and it's also one of the top wines of the vintage, which is saying something." - Josh Raynolds

2011 Vintage Note: This is what we consider on a year-in and year-out basis our most unique and exotic wine. This is, as always, our only wine that is made in 100% new Cadus barrels. As always this wine is a textural experience beyond any of our other wines. Rather than attempting to show, in painstaking detail, the individual qualities of the vineyards we work with, the Notorious bottling is about a particular style of wine that is richer, more intense, denser in texture and more lifted aromatically than our other bottlings. A careful barrel selection limits the quantity on this, sometimes greatly. The greatest case production occurred in 2006 with just over 300 cases. Most years the production is between 100-200 cases. In 2011 the selected barrels come from Durant Vineyard (half barrel) and Balcombe Vineyard (one barrel) from the Dundee Hills, Olenik Vineyard (one barrel) from the Chehalem Mountain Appellation and one barrel from the Winery Block at our Estate Vineyard. As you can see that is not a lot. That only adds up to 85 cases, making it our smallest bottling of Notorious since 2002. These barrels were chosen, of course, for their uniqueness and excellence but also to show how a cooler vintage can make wines of extraordinary power. This has great concentration, dark, supple fruit and incredible intensity in the back of the wine. This runs quite different than the overall narrative of the 2011 vintage, but we are sort of looking to make a statement with this wine and we are pretty sure we achieved it with this 2011. This is a fun but incredibly serious and sure to be long-lived Pinot Noir.

2010 Vintage Tasting Notes

Tanzer 93 points!

Deep, bright red. Explosively perfumed nose offers an array of dark berry and floral scents, along with notes of cinnamon, allspice and cola. Sappy, palate- staining black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors show very good clarity and pick up smokiness with air. The smooth, seamless finish shows outstanding persistence and resonating spice and floral character. This could be drunk now but I'd hold onto it for a while. - Josh Raynolds

This is our smallest bottling of the Notorious blend since the quantity-challenged 2004 vintage when we also bottled just 6 barrels of wine under this particular label. This blend changes each vintage based on what we think are the most exotic barrels the cellar has to offer. In 2009 we were extremely limited in the barrels we did use our Notorious technique on and they happened to all come from Balcombe Vineyard and there are only 4 of them so just about 90 cases will be produced which is our lowest production on this wine since 2002. What is truly recognizable even at this youthful age is the length of this wine. There is so much substance that is so well-balanced that it carries on and on. Buy it for itís concentration, depth and exotic fruit but cellar and savor it for it length and complexity. This is a beautiful, beautiful wine.

This is, as always, our only wine that is made in 100% new Cadus barrels. As always this wine is a textural experience beyond any of our other wines. The richness of the wine, the lavish fruit, the spice and tannin from the barrels and the rigorous selection of the absolute best stuff results in a wine that is exotic, nuanced, layered, pleasurable and nearly hedonistic in its youth. This wine is especially age-worthy and will still be a vibrant, primary wine for many, many years in the cellar. - the winery

2008 Vintage Tasting Notes

From the winery:

As always, this wine is a textural experience beyond any of our other wines. The richness of the wine, the lavish fruit, the spice and tannin from the barrels and the rigorous selection of the absolute best stuff results in a wine that is exotic, nuanced, layered, pleasurable and nearly hedonistic in its youth. The past three vintages have all received 92 points from The International Wine Cellar and we expect no less from this bottling. 135 cases bottled.

This is our smallest bottling of the Notorious blend since the quantity-challenged 2004 vintage when we also bottled just 6 barrels of wine under this particular label. This blend changes each vintage based on what we think are the most exotic barrels the cellar has to offer. In 2008 we chose a blend of 3 barrels from Balcombe Vineyard and 3 barrels from different sections of our Estate Vineyard. We chose based on the superbly rich, dense, creamy and full-bodied natures of these barrels. This wine is a marvel in 2008. What is truly recognizable even at this youthful age is the length of this wine. There is so much substance that is so well-balanced that it carries on and on.

2007 Vintage Tasting Notes

Tanzer score - 92 points "Vivid red. Exotically scented bouquet of red and dark berries, five-spice powder, rose and suave vanillin oak. Plush raspberry and blackberry flavors are deepened by sweet cola and floral pastille notes, with supple tannins lending support. The finish strongly echoes the dark fruit and floral notes and lingers impressively. This is extremely seductive now but is balanced to age. Incidentally, the Notorious is the only Patricia Green wine that ever gets 100% new oak."

Very limited. Less than 200 cases were made.

Tasting notes from the winery:

For the first time ever we have had to take a step back in production on the Notorious bottling. After hitting a high-water mark in 2006 with over 320 cases we only bottled 160 cases of the 2007. This is not because we did not think highly of the wines from 2007.

The issue lay in the blending of wines in 2007 which proved to be more problematic than in past years. We just felt that we were experiencing difficulties blending Dundee Hill wine with Ribbon Ridge wine which are the two sources of wine for the Notorious bottling. Every time we put them together we felt that we were getting a wine that was in competition with its component parts.

We ended up having to work with blends that were exclusive to either appellation. In the end we chose a combination of 5 barrels from Balcombe Vineyard and 2 barrels from Ana Vineyard.
