From the celebrated 1998 vintage, this Springhill Pinot is dense and fruity, once again with black cherry and smoke in the nose and palate, full and round in the mid-palate and nicely balanced with acidity and soft tannins in the finish.
General: 100% Pommard clone, 10-year-old vines grown on a west slope on Veneta Variant soil (much like Willakenzie) on 3' X 9' spacing in the Mid Willamette Valley.
1998 yield was just under 2 tons per acre. Harvest was on October 16. Sugars were at 23.2 degrees brix, PH of 3.3 and total acidity of .87 gm/l. Three quarters of the fruit was destemmed and one quarter shoveled whole-cluster into stainless steel milk tanks for a "cold soak" which lasted for 4 days when the natural yeasts took off. Primary completed in 10 days and reached a temperature spike of about 92 degrees. Batches were pressed into blending/settling tanks and then racked off gross lees into 50% 1-year-old barrels and 50% new wood, half French Troncais and half American. Wine completed ML fermentation through the winter, was racked only once into the blend tanks and bottled in Sept. 1998. The wine was neither fined nor filtered.
