MORE INFORMATION
Zephyra, the goddess of Van Duzer's west wind, was brought to life by famed illustrator John Martinez. Best known for his fine posters depicting classical figures from works of Shakespeare and opera, Martinez has also created dust covers for a wide range of book publishers including Random House, Doubleday and The New York Times. Music fans may recognize Martinez's artwork in the commemorative posters which he created for the international jazz festivals of New Orleans, Nice and Newport.
Van Duzer's label was created by Portland's Anstey Healy Design. Creative Director Catherine Healy transformed the brand identity into an engaging package. "The goal of the project was to explain a natural phenomena - the west wind - in the form of something interesting and romantic. Mythology seemed to be a logical place to start."
The other message that the design team wished to convey was Van Duzer's minimalist but precise winemaking philosophy. This is evident in the label's typography which is rooted in Arts & Crafts style with elements of Art Noveau. Historically, Arts & Crafts symbolized a move away from industrialization. It embodies what is simple but beautifully handcrafted, pure, authentic and functional.
"This is a good description of our winemaking philosophy as well as the design theme," according to Marilynn Thoma. "We respect the integrity of the grapes from our vineyard and minimize the handling which the grapes undergo before the wine is bottled."
