HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This tiny winery hit it big with a high score from Wine Spectator for their Syrah. This rich wine shows unusually nice aspects of the terroir of the region, with distinct yet prefectly integrated nots of desert herbs, spice, and black berry fruit. An excellent value, Avalon highly recommended.
From the winery: "This Merlot was crafted from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. In producing the 2000 Merlot, Whitman Cellars takes full advantage of the region's terroir. One can literally taste the rich earth in the wine, with aromatics balancing perfectly with a fine oak bouquet. Blackberry and spice with toasted oak lead to a very long, stunning finish. The palate is balanced between traditional Merlot and wood, and the mouth feel has soft tones that accentuate the Merlot character."
