Hi from Andy at Avalon -
Marcus was off gallivanting last week so I took the opportunity to tell you about some of my favorite Oregon Pinots.
My Oregon Pinot noir Picks:
Walter Scott La Combe Verte Pinot noir 2010
$17.95 ($19.95 retail)
I tasted the Verte and it went right to the top of my list of 2010 Pinots. A gorgeous, refreshing initial splash leads with fresh raspberries and a laser-like precision that glides across your mid palette. The white pepper finish makes this a nice step above other everyday-priced Pinots. It lives up to my high expectations of the 2010 vintage, meaning this wine is drinking beautifully right now AND has the structure to lay down for 8-10 years!
The dynamic duo behind Walter Scott are two of Oregon's star wine personalities. Ken Pahlow stumps for Evening Land Vineyards and Erica Landon is a well known Sommelier.
Matello Winter's Hill Pinot noir 2009
$37.76 ($41.95 retail)
Among my favorites of the 2008 vintage were Marcus Goodfellow's wines. His 2009s are on the leader board as well. We recently tasted through all of his 2009 vintage wines and the brightest star in my book was the Winter's Hill. Succulent candied cherry fills the nose and readies your taste buds for impeccably balanced red fruit. At almost 50% whole cluster, there is an exotic complexity to this sizeable Pinot, which is juxtaposed by a delicate silkiness in the finish that I thoroughly enjoy. Harvested from a single block of Pommard. Only 65 cases were produced.
Carter Vineyard Hillblock Pinot noir 2008
$41.36 ($45.95 retail)
Ah memories. This was one of the first wines I tasted after starting at Avalon and further cemented my adoration of Oregon Pinot. After re-tasting and reading through my original note from last year, I was pleasantly surprised at how much the wine had integrated. The caramel notes that I totally dug have really started to roll. I'm not saying you should drink all of these right now, but pulling a bottle soon would be a fun sneak peek of the 08 Oregon goodness to come from cellaring. Made by Ken Wright from the oldest Pommard section of Carter Vineyard.
I'm here all day and tomorrow (Saturday) and I'd love to chat.
You can email or call me with your order, or follow the links to order online.
Thanks for reading!
