Three New Oregon 2012 Pinots for You

three-bottle-11-19-2013-325pPeople are positively freaking out about Oregon’s 2012 vintage. When you have utterly low-key winemakers like Steven Westby, whose Elemental Pinot is featured below, describing 2012 as the best vintage he’s ever seen, you begin to understand why. I’ve been tasting a bunch of new releases and the wines are SO attractive and built to age. Best of both worlds? You bet.

The only downside is the miniscule crop, which coupled with the early vintage praise will cause the wines to sell out very quickly. Here are three brand new 2012s that I highly recommend. Tiny production, made with care, from three small wineries that keep the vitality in Oregon wine.

Bow & Arrow Medici Vineyard Pinot noir 2012
$29.65 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($32.95)
Gorgeous aromas. A melange of red and black fruits mix with Christmas spices and orange essence. Black cherry and strawberry, sweet herbs and orange essence, all on a silky texture. My mouth waters when I drink this. This is a remarkably integrated young wine that shows beautifully when first opened and should age for 6-10 years. A November Reserve Pinot Noir Club selection.
Only 250 cases made.
From our new neighbor, who shares The Bindery building in Portland with us.

Elemental Cellars Farrar Vineyard Pinot noir 2012
$26.95 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($29.95)
There’s a ton going on here. Opening with buoyant blue and black fruit and black pepper accents, it expands towards both the red and black fruit spectrums, dishing out bing cherry, elderflower and dark chocolate notes. Makes you want to eat grilled duck. Now.
Only 96 cases made.
Elemental Cellars is the personal label of Steven Westby, winemaker for Witness Tree. Steven has been telling us about this wine since he put it in barrel.

Walter Scott Cuvee Ruth Pinot noir 2012
$29.65 in any 12 bottle or Build a Case* order ($32.95)
So attractive, from start to finish. Cola spice, black raspberry and cherry, a pinch of licorice. Superb concentration and density balanced by freshness, with ultra fine tannins lingering on the finish.
Only 175 cases made.
This new, reserve cuvee honors the parents of winery partner Sue Steinman, and it celebrates the pending birth of Ken and Erica’s daughter.

All three arrive Thursday and I look forward to helping with an order today. Thanks for all of your support.

P.S. We’ve moved…to Portland! Our retail store is still in the construction phase but will be open soon. Meanwhile, our warehouse is cranking!
