Woodward Canyon Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon 07

Winery: Woodward Canyon

Previous vintage tasting notes: This 2006 Columbia Valley “Old Vines” Cabernet Sauvignon is produced (97 %) from grapes that were planted in the early 1970’s. In mid October, cabernet sauvignon grapes were harvested by hand from Sagemoor Vineyard (56 %) and Champoux Vineyard (41 %) located on benches above the Columbia River in southeastern Washington. Jackson clone Petit Verdot (3 %) from Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard completes the blend.

The 2006 vintage was another warm one for Washington State though not as warm as 2005. This 2006 "Old Vines" Cabernet shows more restraint and sophistication than the 2005 and will likely age better.

The wine was pumped over and punched down two times per day in 2,000 liter stainless steel tanks. Average fermentation was between seven and ten days. After pressing and racking, the various lots were moved to new French chateau barrels for aging and maturation. In late spring of 2008 this wine was racked from barrel, assembled and bottled the middle of July. It is worth noting here that this is one of the most rigorously selected "Old Vines” Cabernet Sauvignon we have ever made in our 14 years of “Old Vines” production. We produced less than 400 cases.

This “Old Vines” Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich and complex red wine. It expresses the purity of fully mature cabernet sauvignon fruit that one only can get from 35 year old vines. The Sagemoor Vineyard cabernet truly expresses itself in this vintage. The color is dark red to purple and complex aromas of cherry, leather and smoke develop in the glass. Flavors of ripe black cherries and cassis married with spicy new oak and vanilla coat the mouth. The texture is soft and silky yet there are mature integrated tannins in the rich, long finish. I love the proportion this red wine displays and with proper storage, it should age for ten years easily.

New release of Woodward Canyon's flagship wine. A tiny fraction of the normal production, the 2005 is highly collectible and will age gracefully for at least 15 years. Huge stucture is coupled with fine balance in this world class Washington Cabernet.

Previous vintage, 2004 vintage notes:

ROBERT PARKER 94 POINTS!

"The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon - Old Vines (35 years old)elevates the bar. Composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, it is opaque purple-colored and delivers a superb perfume of pain grille, scortched earth, espresso, black currants, and blueberries. This is followed by an extracted wine with richly flavored dark fruits, outstanding concentration, and great balance leading to a 60-second, pure finish. Give this powerful wine 4-6 years of additional bottle age and drink it through 2035." - Parker's Wine Advocate -- 8-31-07

This 2004 'Old Vines' Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich and powerful red wine. It expresses the purity of fully mature cabernet sauvignon fruit that one only can get from 35 year old vines. The petit verdot offers another layer of complexity and broadens the flavor profile of the wine beautifully. Flavors of dried black cherry and cassis married with spicy new oak and vanilla coats the mouth. The texture is soft and silky yet there are firm mature tannins in the rich, long finish. The color is dark blackish purple and complex fruit aromas leap from the glass. This red wine will benefit greatly from additional cellaring and, with proper storage, should last for twelve years or more.

The vineyard contains an "Old Vine" section, planted in 1972, from which its most highly prized fruit is obtained. The Old Vine section is jointly owned by Quilceda Creek, Woodward Canyon, Andrew Will, and Powers wineries. Woodward Canyon's Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon, made from this Champoux Old Vine fruit since 1981, is considered one of the best Cabernets made from the site.
